The Scantle Roof
We are the original "Scantle" roofing company, established in 1990, and born out of a passionate desire to restore the vernacular architecture of Cornwall and Devon. Since those early days our company has developed and expanded to encompass not only the traditional roofing styles found in Cornwall and Devon, but also all aspects of historic building restoration and repair.

We are experts not only in traditional wet and dry laid scantle slate roofing, but also rag slate roofing, slate hanging and slate flooring. Our restoration portfolio contains many examples of lime plaster, lime mortars and decorative mouldings, stonemasonry and traditional timber joinery. Over the years we have established our reputation as specialists in building conservation and preservation throughout the South West.

We are winners of the prestigious Cornwall Buildings Group award for the restoration of a 15th century listed farmhouse, and some of our major projects have featured in Grand Designs Magazine, Period House, The Daily Telegraph, The Western Morning News and BBC Spotlight.
Services
The vernacular architecture of both Cornwall and Devon contains some spectacular examples of traditional slate roofing styles. Sadly over time, many of these beautiful and historic roofs have been lost and replaced with inappropriate, often imported, materials. However, since our origins in 1990, we have saved and restored countless exquisite roofs, using materials sourced from the area and employing traditional slating techniques.
Historically buildings were constructed from the materials to be found close by, traditionally the local quarry. If no stone was immediately to hand then timber or "cob" was used. The term "cob" describes a much maligned building material which has been around for thousands of years, and consists of a mixture of sharp edged stone, clay soil and straw.
As well as the traditional roofing styles and conservation building techniques for which we are widely known, The Scantle Roof Company also undertakes unique and individual projects for private clients. For example: We have built "old" houses in an area of conservation, where no dwellings stood before.

I have not had experience of the standard of work from this company but only received a quotation for re-laying a scantle roof. The quote was like for like with others apart from this one was reusing the existing delabole slate as apposed to replacing with newer matching delabole. This company came in at over double the cost of the most expensive quote I received. When questioning the price I was patronised by the "owner" with a misplaced analogy and told shortly the cost was as stated; which felt at best rude and at worst insulting. I chose another less condescending roofer.
