Kyran Hall established his stained glass studio in Manchester in 1982. Designing, manufacturing traditional and contemporary stained glass windows and leaded lights. He uses traditional techniques of painting and firing glass, etching and sandblasting together with kiln formed glass to create beautiful and unique stained glass windows.
Naturally occurring glass called obsidian, created in the heat of volcanoes, was known to early man over one million years ago and many remains of the tools and weapons have been found. Fulgarite is another naturally occurring glass formed by lightning hitting sand and tektites are similarly caused by meteorites.
I had an enquiry about the possibility of providing some decorative glass for three pairs of doors opening into the atrium of a converted farmhouse in Cheshire. Maximum light was required through the glass and on this project coloured glass would detract from the ambiance of the rooms. It was decided to use etched (sandblasted) glass and we used the panoramic views around the farmhouse in the glass design.
I had an enquiry about manufacturing some colourful stained glass windows above a bar in a new conference centre at a Cheshire golf club. The client wanted them to be colourful and they were to be lit from behind. I suggested views of some of the greens on the golf course. I spent the wettest afternoon of the year trudging around the course taking photographs.
The most popular settings for decorative glass are doors and door surrounds. A big statement can be made about the property with a traditional stained glass window in the entrance. Also reinstating a traditional stained glass window to a front door where it is lost goes a long way to enhancing a home.
