Minerva, established over twenty five years ago, is a small business engaged in the specialist repair and conservation of historic stone and plasterwork. One of our directors is the consultant on stonework and monuments to the Salisbury Diocesan Advisory Committee. We are based in Frome in Somerset where we have a workshop and work mainly in the City of Bath as well as throughout Dorset and Wiltshire.

Over the years we have worked on many diverse projects to repair and conserve grand houses, parish churches, chapels, cathedrals, ancient bridges, archaeological monuments and historic gardens. We have an unrivalled expertise in the use of building limes for repairs and pointing and a rare understanding of the building techniques, materials and vernacular style of south west and southern Britain.
Services
Our directors, Andrew Sharland and Andrew Ziminski met in the early 1990s whilst attending the Postgraduate Stone Conservation course at Weymouth College, Dorset. Both went on to gain further training on the repair of the tower and spire of Salisbury Cathedral before establishing Minerva. We are lucky to have a great team with fine conservation work undertaken by Nell Pickering assisted by Sharra Oram, Peter Yorke and George Woodland.
We have worked to conserve and repair many hundreds of church monuments over the past twenty five years, from simple box tombs to grand freestanding monuments. Recording prior to conservation works on the Easter Sepulchre monument, South Pool, Devon. Drawn by C Venables. To complement our sculptural and masonry areas of expertise we often undertake lettercutting in limestone, slate and more unusual local stones such as Blue Lias.
Work on church architecture and fittings requires a very special set of skills and a sympathetic attention to detail. We have worked on many dozens of beautiful churches in the South West and beyond, both on the main fabric of the buildings and their associated monuments. We are able to carry out repairs and restorations to all types of monuments.
Our fully equipped stonemasonry and conservation workshop, based in Frome, Somerset, compliments our other in situ and site based works. Its large floor space, lifting equipment, and range of analytical equipment, allow us to work on a wide variety of pieces, from small decorative sculptures to large public monuments.
