INFORMATION: There are two kinds of rats found in the UK, the most common being the Brown Rat (also known as the Common Rat or the Norway Rat). The Brown Rat is normally a dull brown in colour, around 32cm to 43cm long from nose to tail, with small ears, a blunt nose and rather sharp teeth. The other is the Black Rat (also known as the Ship Rat), but this is usually only found around ports and airports and is quite unusual.

INFORMATION: The house mouse is one of the most prolific pests in the UK, on a par with, if not worse than, rats. It is responsible for the spread of numerous diseases including toxoplasmosis (a disease that can be a threat to pregnant women), salmonella and typhus. It can contaminate food with its droppings, fur and urine (they urinate constantly to mark territory).

INFORMATION: Many people confuse wasps with bees, particularly honey bees, which do have a somewhat similar appearance and are around the same size. The Common wasp is the one most usually found in the UK and it always has bright yellow and black stripes. The honey bees' stripes are more subtle - a kind of black and dark brown or black and golden brown colour.

INFORMATION: There are a number of different varieties of flies found in the UK, but they all share one thing in common - their incredible ability to spread disease. House flies and blow flies are the most common flies in the UK, though fruit flies are a particular nuisance in domestic and commercial kitchens and anywhere that food is prepared, sold or stored.

INFORMATION: Often associated with unhygienic conditions and poor cleaning standards, these days bed bugs can also be found in properties that are exceptionally clean. Frequent travel common today, as well as a developing resistance to pesticides, means that the infestation of bed bugs can occur practically anywhere.
