English City Stone
If you would like to see our displays come to see us at 210 Upper Tulse Hill, London, SW2 2NS. Yorkstone is a term used to describe sandstone that has been quarried in Yorkshire. There is much variation between different types of sandstone, but the unifying factor amongst the varieties from Yorkshire is their durability.

This is a consequence of their fine grained structure, as opposed to other varieties of sandstone such as 'gritstone'. Yorkstone is a traditional London stone, especially for paving and steps. If you'd like to see examples of our London stone steps please take a look at our portfolio and interactive maps.

Portland Stone is a Jurassic period limestone quarried exclusively on the Isle of Portland in Dorset. The stone formed on the floor of a shallow, warm sub-tropical sea. It's main constituent is calcium carbonate and the calcified remains of shelled sea creatures are a pleasing feature of the material.
Services
Our company has been established for over 25 years. We began life as landscapers specialising in stonework, but encompassing all areas of hard and soft landscaping. During the late 1990's we opened a retail stone merchants in Clapham, south west London.
Yorkstone, or Yorkshire Stone, is a generic name for sandstone quarried in the North of England. It is characterised by its fine, tightly packed, grains which make it an ideal hard wearing material for use as steps and other architectural masonry. The colour of the stone differs depending upon the area in which it is quarried and the minerals which form the stone.
We are able to offer a variety of York Stone and Portland Stone paving products, please contact us for our latest prices. Diamond sawn and non-slip, this material is identical to that used for steps. The image shows an unusual beige-blue Yorkstone, but we can supply various single colour slabs in buff or grey York or creamy white Portland stones.
English City Stone are able to offer you a variety of bespoke York and Portland stone products. None of our items are "off the shelf", so if you can provide us with measurements or drawings we can produce to your requirements. Alternatively we can visit you at your home, offer advice and take any measurements ourselves.
It's important to know that you're in safe hands when you consider the implications and possible difficulties of replacing old steps with new stone steps. That's why all of our stone fitters are employed directly - we know the credentials of each worker and take full responsibility for their work. The processes involved in removing a set of steps and installing new are varied and complex.

Amazing work - incredibly professional and beautifully finished - really quite special.
They even went the extra mile and dropped a "bike bar" onto the back of the wall so we're no longer dragging bikes through the house.
Strongly recommend!

The advice given to us by English City Stone before placing our order was immensely helpful; the stone paving had been very precisely cut and prepared before being delivered; and the workmanship in laying the paving was top quality. All in all, an excellent service. BH London SW6

English City Stone replaced our crumbling front steps quickly, efficiently and very competently. Because it was a wholly exterior job they were able to deal with it despite lockdown; the only downside to this was our inability to keep them plied with tea or coffee. Passers-by have already asked me (from a proper social distance, of course) for details of the company, which I've been happy to give them.

I have worked for the London Door Company for over 10 years and on many occasions we have replaced new front doors and frames on properties with worn/cracked concrete and stone thresholds. I first came across English City Stone on a job in Putney where the owners had already had a very nice new stone threshold installed. Thereafter I have recommended all my clients use English City Stone and have found Neil and his team to be very helpful and efficient, without exception everyone has been very happy with the finished work and it has allowed us to achieve a higher overall standard of fit and finish

Neil is a dedicated, careful craftsman - a quality that is only too rare and difficult to find now. The new front and rear steps look beautiful, the stone is of high quality and expertly cut and installed. Many thanks to Neil, Patrick and the team

Neil and team built us some new front steps. The stone is absolutely beautiful and has been widely admired. Communication was excellent and they are craftspeople through and through. The price was consistent with the quality of the finished product. Would recommend wholeheartedly.

Our front path and steps were in a poor condition, a rough concrete surface having been laid over the original Victorian path tiles and Yorkstone steps many years before. We decided to restore these as far as possible to their former glory, using reproduction Victorian path tiles and top quality Yorkstone steps. After inspecting the path and steps Neil of English City Stone gave us valuable expert advice on the best way forward, and provided the most competitive quote that we received. Many biscuits and cups of coffee later he and his excellent team (Patrick, Janis, Mike, George, Henry and Mark
