Peter Lanyon heads up a small team of highly skilled and experienced green wood furniture makers. From our south Devon base, we hand-craft stunning lamps, tables, chairs and desks using a 'slow' and sustainable methodology that relies on low energy and simple technology - a refreshing change to otherwise fast-paced, mass-produced furniture.
We regularly exhibit work in London and across the UK. Peter is available for commissions, and runs popular woodworking courses at his workshop - just a short stroll from the stunning south Devon coastline. Peter is also an award-winning member of the Devon Guild, an organisation that supports contemporary crafts.
Each of our iconic pieces begin the same way. We hand-select coppiced wood from a well-managed local forest on the south Devon coast. We then use ancient methods to split and shave the wood with traditional tools such as a side axe, froe and draw knife, before leaving it to season for several months.

Peter made us a three stemmed table lamp which is a work of art. Even the lampshades are made of wood, so that the light that shines through has a texture and warmth to it. The shapes of the stems were very important as I wanted it to be similar to a group of orchids, with gently nodding heads, which Peter created perfectly. The lamp gives us pleasure every evening in our sitting room. A lovely gift to ourselves for our golden anniversary. Thank you, Peter.

I attended a most enjoyable course at Peter Lanyon Furniture. Peter was warm and helpful and his apprentice supported the course participants as well. Everyone managed to make a small table/stool with support. Tools were available for all and were well maintained. I hope to attend again sometime in the future.

We attended the two day introduction to green wood furniture making course. We each made a stool to be used as a bedside table. Peter was brilliant - a real expert craftsman abely supported by his apprentice Toby. Peter's style of teaching is calm, measured and clear which for a novice makes learning so much less daunting. We loved the experience so much that we are booking onto the chair making course.

Wonderful course with a wonderful teacher!
Peter and his apprentice Toby were brilliant woodworking mentors- they were relaxed, helpful, calm and encouraging! It’s a green wood course so you use your hand tools mostly which is incredibly satisfying. We started outside chopping up logs and finish with a beautiful hand made stool!
Very much recommend!

I first met Peter at the Wisley craft fair several years ago and bought one of his graceful standard lamps. Recently, I commissioned a small lamp to welcome guests in our hallway – we discussed different woods and Peter made a lovely lamp in cherry to match the height I requested. First rate craftmanship and a beautiful lamp.

Creative Seating May 2021 - What a great course. A fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the creative and construction process, skilfully guided by Peter, ably assisted by Toby, in a peaceful environment and all resulting in a beautiful bench that has pride of place in my garden. Will definitely try to go again.
