Plastering today requires a knowledge of different materials as new products are always being introduced. Whereas before we used sand and cement backing on most backgrounds, we now have a variety of lightweight backing plasters for different backgrounds as well as different finish plasters. We always keep well informed of different materials being used and gain knowledge on how to use them.
It is a material that allows the passage of water through it - it then sheds this water allowing the structure to breath. Modern materials hold in the water causing damp problems whereas lime plastering, used in conjunction with lime based paints, allows the water to evaporate. There are a vaiety of different finishes you can achive (even making up your own).
