Windmills once dominated the Fens - with Bourn Mill west of the city a worthy survivor of these splendid wooden buildings. Don't worry that your floor is too old or damaged to work upon: we've restored every level of condition during our twenty years in the business. The earliest record of the mill dates from 1636 (and it may be much older).

As a postmill, its body has a central post so that the whole superstructure can be rotated to enable the sails to catch the wind. In Bourn's case, the post is supported by a wooden trestle of crossbars and quarter bars. After various owners - including the Bishops whose initials of 1875 are carved on the interior, Bourn was taken over by the CambridgePPF in 1932.

Of the many wooden creations in the city itself, the President's Lodge in Queen's College merits a mention. Sitting over the north cloisters, this remarkable timber building of 1540 has impressive carved and linenfold panelling.
