After studying English and Art History at UEA and Goldsmiths, London, Andy was "footling around with no real idea of what I wanted to do" when an old school friend called: "He told me about how he was working as a landscaper for this eccentric guy Mike Bayon and there was a vacancy - you had to work really hard, but it was great fun."Mike Bayon Garden Design was founded in 1982.

The clients were looking for the intimacy of a Moorish courtyard in this small sunny garden. We created an Arabic inspired pool and walk over rill; the centrepiece of the water was a salvaged Victorian pier cap made of Portland stone. The floor was a gentle terracotta colour and they could walk over the rill to sit at the end of the garden for drinks in the evening sun.
This estate of over 35 acres surrounds a Georgian mansion built in 1735, with two extensions from the late Victorian period. The clients wanted to make a garden that would match the grace of their home. Their aim, like ours, was to understand the history of the house and create a garden that would suit the lifestyle of today, but also reflect some of the horticultural design themes of the last three centuries.
The garden is looking wonderful. During this last week of sunshine I have so enjoyed sitting in it, with my feet up, a tray of tea and a good book, from which I am constantly distracted by the loveliness around me. Having worked a 13-hour day, I didn't get home until after dark yesterday. So, it was only when I opened the curtains this morning that I saw my beautiful new garden and lawn for the first time.
