Services
If your boiler is running fine, you may think you will leave the servicing for the time being. This could be a false economy. Your boiler is like your car. It needs a regular MOT. During a year of general use deposits build up inside the boiler which can reduce the efficiency of the system leading to higher gas bills for you.
A conventional system has two water tanks in the loft, a large 'cold water storage tank' and small 'feed and expansion tank'. The 'cold water storage tank' draws water from the cold water mains to refill. Water from the storage tank feeds cold water down to the cylinder (normally in the airing cupboard).
A hot water cylinder is a 'ready to use' store of hot water that can be set thermostatically to give a constant temperature, typically 60-65°C, regardless of the outside temperature. This means it can be blended down to a comfortable, usable temperature which gives a greatly increased volume of hot water available for use in the home.
The diagram below shows a typical heating system and problem areas. With modern boilers particularly now with the advent of high efficiency boilers there is a need to ensure your system is clean before installation and treated with inhibiter when commissioning. There is an approved standard required by all manufacturers known as BENCHMARK to which installation must be carried out to ensure your manufacturers guarantee is valid.
Solar water systems use the solar energy in daylight to heat water for use in our homes and businesses. A solar water (or solar thermal) system requires only daylight to work and will efficiently heat your water even on the cloudiest of days. It works by capturing the energy in daylight to heat a fluid in the solar water collectors (solar panels) fitted to your roof.
