Helen Lucas Architects
Helen Lucas Architects is a private architectural firm based in Marchmont, Edinburgh UK whose area of activity extends to the far reaches of Scotland including the islands and Highlands, the Lothians and Borders, London and the South West of England. We specialise in bespoke buildings for private commercial and domestic clients.

We build new buildings and have experience of working within national parks and national scenic areas. Much of our work involves extending and conserving existing and historic and listed buildings. We are comitted to sustainable design, aiming to create architecture that has a more positive impact on the world around us.
Services
The space has been transformed into a light and functional area that is enjoyed by all the family. Helen Lucas Architects designs bespoke new houses, and adjusts existing buildings, to fit our clients' lifestyles. Working with HLA was a joy. As we are based overseas, they constantly put themselves in our shoes during the project, always mindful of how WE want to live in the house.
Our buildings are noticed for their attention to detail. We are particularly known for our use of wood - both as a cladding material and as a frame. We are interested in the wider picture of sustainability, taking account of life-cycle costs of buildings and re-using and adapting existing buildings to encourage their continued use.
A ground and basement apartment within a category-B listed townhouse in the New Town conservation area, Edinburgh. In addition to a whole house refurbishment, our brief was to bring natural light into the lower level of the property, create improved living spaces and engage the house with it's long south facing garden.
A simple palette of materials was used: cedar boarding, aluminium and glass. The aluminium roof extends over the kitchen back door providing a covered route to the 'potting shed' for rainy days! We continue to be delighted with our potting shed and particularly the design. Practically, it works perfectly, as well as being a pleasure just to be in and to look at.
The conversion of the maid's room outshot and the the basement storage rooms of this Victorian property in Edinburgh not only provides additional living accommodation, but also a much improved relationship with the garden. A spiral stair provides drama against the double-height window and is one of two connections with the existing upper level while a bespoke pivot-door opens up the lower level onto an external terrace.

We first worked with Helen Lucas Architects back in 2014 when we undertook a major extension and refurbishment of our hotel in NW Highlands (Kylesku Hotel). I could not praise the whole team highly enough. Their inspirational designs (which complemented and didn't compete with the exceptionally beautiful area); their positive, helpful and professional approach; their delivery and support were all first class. We had an incredibly tight build window of just a few months- over the winter. All went to plan. It enabled us to take our business to the next level. Indeed, since then we have worked on
