Established in 1999 by myself, Jane Exley in Elterwater The Lake District. The Woolly Rug Company specialises in the design and crafting of bespoke floor rugs, runners and tapestries made from local Herdwick wool. Designs inspired by the world-renowned Lakeland landscape, expressing the wide vistas and the small details of nature, are combined with form and function - the rugs are extremely long-lasting.
I hope you enjoy browsing my site. Please contact me if you have a project in mind or any questions to ask. The Woolly Rug studio is situated on the outskirts of Ambleside, by the River Rothay. It is here that every rug is created, from the initial stages of design and patterning, to a careful hand-tufting process.
Alongside this working space, a gallery contains finished rugs and other artworks, and is open for visitors. Herdwick Wool a natural resource, is renewable, has great biodegradability, is sustainable, is a good sound insulator, and has excellent fire-retardancy. It also has hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial properties making the air that we breathe cleaner and better.

The Woolly Rug studio is situated on the outskirts of Ambleside, beside the River Rothay. The sound of the river is ever present, and it's always a pleasure and an inspiration to step outside the door and look over to Loughrigg Fell, which rises above Ambleside. Much of the studio is a working space where every rug is conceived and carefully created.

Sheep have been looked after by humans for thousands of years for food and clothing - in Britain, spinning and weaving has been taking place for almost 4000 years.
What would you like? The first stage is to have a chat, to consider size and design. You may have your own design ready to hand, or you may have a rough idea. Or if you'd like me to come up with the design, I can do this in response to our conversation. I'll normally send you a sketch of the design, or a choice of several designs, so you are sure it is suitable.
Please browse through these completed commissions hand-made for some happy customers below, dream and be inspired. If you'd like to work with me on your own Woolly rug artwork for your home, I'd love to hear from you. We just want to let you know how delighted we are with the bedside rugs which you made for us.
