The practice was founded by Mark Chisholm Batten in 1997 and has developed steadily to what it is today; a dedicated team which is design-led, with a passion for architecture. Our expertise in residential architecture, combined with a meticulous approach to planning and detail has resulted in an impressive portfolio for high quality residential projects.
We will guide your building project through the process below, ensuring it is inspiring and enjoyable. We offer a uniquely bespoke service focusing on residential projects solely for individual clients. This has allowed us to develop a client-led practice philosophy dedicated to achieving design excellence down to the smallest detail.
We were asked to come up with a scheme that transformed a 4-storey terraced house that we had previously extended 12 years ago. Given that the clients are very keen on their garden and that the property had already been extended, we focused on the internal reconfiguration in order to better connect the living spaces and create a contemporary design with the 'wow factor' that the clients wanted.
The property is within the Heaver Estate Conservation area and was built between 1890-1910. Earlier conservatories and extensions had been added to the property but the ground floor rooms felt very disconnected from the garden. Our client's priority was to open up the back of the house and create dynamic family room with connection with the garden.
We have designed schemes for this project which involves the opening up and enlarging of the ground floor - in order to create a large, open-plan living area, reconfiguration of the first floor and a loft extension. The clients came to us with the brief of creating a contemporary, open-plan ground floor, which maximised usable space in a 5 metre-wide Victorian terraced house.
