Established in 1973 by Rita & Jack Maher, the business started life as a small hardware store. The shop also sold a small range of electrical accessories introduced by their son Barrie, who was an electrical contractor by trade, a business that still trades as part of J Maher Ltd.
In 1988 the premises next door became available and Barrie, with the help of his wife Janette, decided to buy the property in order to expand the electrical sales side of the business.The second property also came with a small yard, which allowed them to stock an increased range of gardening products.
In 1990 Rita & Jack decided to retire and passed full control of the business to Barrie & Janette. In time the living accommodation above the shop was turned into storage areas & the gardens at the back of the property became a much larger storage yard. This coincided with a local horticultural supplier retiring.

Services
We supply a large range of composts from manufacturers such as Levington, Clover, Erin, J Arthur Bowers and Durstons. We stock John Innes, Ericaceous, Tub and Basket, Multi-Purpose as well as some specialist composts. We also stock peat free compost and top soil. Available to order online for delivery.
We supply a variety of wood bark, ranging from decorative bark, composted bark and mini chipped bark from leading suppliers such a Levington, Arthur Bowers and Clover. Bark is perfect for sprucing up gardens, using for borders and play areas as well as protecting plants and soil to combat weed growth.
Generally, Salad Seed Potatoes can be sown in February/March and harvested in July/August. We stock a range of Salad Seed Potatoes which are especially useful for fresh potatoes with salad crops. The range of Salad Seed Potatoes includes Charlotte, International Kidney and Pink Fir Apple. These varieties are renowned for their firm waxy flesh and superbly intense flavours which make them perfect for potato salads.

I have known about this treasure trove since I met my wife in 1999. We live near Corby so it’s wonderful to have such a helpful local DIY store that are able to help my disabled but independent mother in law. She recently needed a little screw repairing on her ring door bell and knew exactly where to go for help. “Mars” as they are known locally visited her but told her how much they would charge which was minimal before they visited. She is now safe and secure with her repaired and fully charged “Ring” doorbell. The shop is like the Doctors Tardis which seems massive inside despite being

Popped in today for some plants to be met by an extremely rude lady at the till! Appears this shop does not appreciate darker customers as I’ve heard similar experiences in the past from people of colour. Not surprising however is that the 5* reviewers happen to not be of colour. Learn some manners and try some politeness, it costs nothing.

I have just used this company for the first time for a large delivery of garden manure and compost and the service and value are absolutely excellent and I cannot recommend highly enough. I will definitely be using again.
Update - Four years on and I am still using John Maher every year for their excellent service and prices and now my friend has started using them too.

Called in today and the owner stopped a man coming in to the shop because he wasn't wearing a mask would only serve him at the door. Good on the owner I just wish more people acted like this. Now about the shop it's got everything you need for DIY and more the staff are great nothing to much trouble for them. Note to owner never change the shop.

Ordered a particular shower on a Friday which was recommended by Mahers and was due to turn up for Tuesday. I rang on Tuesday and was told they wasn't getting any due to no stock! Our builder has now had to leave for a week and a half which will cost us no end on time and money as well as a building site of a bathroom! The gentleman's 'don't give a stuff attitude' on the telephone was pretty disgusting!! Spent hundreds of pounds in this shop over the years but never again!!!!
