We are dealing with fire safety issues and the safe removal of poisinous combustion gasses so it's worth choosing your chimney sweep carefully. Rather unbelievably there is no requirement for chimney sweeps in the UK to have undertaken any training whatsoever or for them to be registered with any organisation.
The Guild of Master Chimney sweeps is the leading trade organisation for professional chimney sweeps in the UK (and a few in Republic of Ireland). It constantly raises standards within the industry and provides high quality training to new and existing members. They work with many groups to raise public awareness of pollution issues, carbon monoxide dangers, chimney fires and chimney problems.
We're all aware of the danger from fire or smoke in the home but there is another less well known risk - Carbon monoxide or CO. According to statistics from CO Gas Safety* there were 28 deaths from unintentional CO poisoning in the UK in 2011. There were hundreds of non-fatal poisoning incidents. The real figures are likely to be higher due to a lack of proper reporting.
There are 100's of designs. Cowls and guards offer increased resistance to the flow of combustion gasses and depending on your chimney, the best terminal is often an open pot. It is however sometimes necessaryto fit a guard or cowl. Please note: If there is any chance that smokeless fuel will be used, any guard or terminal must be made of stainless steel or it won't last long.
The information below is available as a concise and informative 20 - 30 minute presentation with lots of pictures, followed by a Q & A session. It can be booked by any interested group and is free of charge (usually 20 mile radius of Cambridge). The basic problem is that the wood is often not burned in an efficient way.

I've been using the services of Lawson for cleaning my chimneys for my open fire and wood burner for the past three years.
Not only is Lawson very professional in his work, he is very thorough in his work and always punctual. I have no problem completely trusting Lawson to work in our home unattended and locking up the house when completed. Lawson only completes the work required and does not look to do unnecessary work or overcharge.
