Initially only fruit and honey were produced but vegetables were introduced by the turn of the century followed by cut flowers and small plants. In 1929 the new Howden by-pass to the recently constructed Boothferry Bridge cut the nursery in two and fruit, flowers and vegetables were sold to passing motorists.
This trade increased and greenhouses were built to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and other produce. At the same time other nurseries were being established in the Howden area with a considerable increase in production during the 2nd World War. One such nursery was Howden Nurseries adjacent to California Gardens.
In 1960 Howden Nurseries the site of the present garden centre was purchased and the production of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, vegetables and flowers were greatly increased to satisfy the number of customers visiting the now much larger California Gardens. But another demand was appearing!

Had lunch today with the girl's 8 of us I had brie and bacon salad which was lovely, although I can't help thinking it would of been easier to eat had the bacon been chopped up, back bacon is a bit tough when it's going cold, it was lovely and I would order it again.
Love the extended café, staff were very helpful and the service great 👍

Have just taken my daughter and niece to see Santa and it was wonderful! Santa and Carol the elf were great and spoke to both girls with the added touch of knowing their best friends names, the colour of our door and the presents they had asked for. Excellent age appropriate gifts too. Thank you for making it so lovely. Will be back next year 😊 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dropped in on the off chance that it would be open, as everywhere else we tried was closed (monday).
We both had a jacket potatoe and what a meal.
Fantastic side salad
Wonderfully fluffy potatoe
Excellent amount of filling.
Prawns on one Tuna on the other.
Coffee very hot and delightful.
Yes we will be back.

Visited today for lunch appox 12.30pm and sorry to say I was very disappointed, they had already run out of paninis, my friend is vegetarian so very limited alternative for her. Ordered quiche which came with a few crisps and side salad, not available with chips. Brought wrong dessert to table. There was a dog (hygiene questionable) barking in the restaurant (not a guide dog) so difficult to have a conversation. Food very average and not value for money. Sadly will not use restaurant again.

The plant dept is fine The restaurant needs attention Been here 3 times & were forgotten each time, the first 2 times we eventually got our meal but on the latest visit we ordered 2 drinks After a lengthy wait I told the waitress to cancel as we had been forgotten again! The place wasn't even busy We walked out & will never return again, which is a shame really as its local to me
