The first thing you should do is immediately suspend introducing new water and waste materials into the drain. This means stop flushing your toilet, stop running water, and cease any activities that involve your outgoing waste water pipes until you have identified whether you have a blockage. It is then advisable to contact a drainage specialist to identify if the drain is public property or private.
In the event of the former, your local authority have a legal obligation to correct the problem for you. The responsibility for drain repair will depend on whether the drain is public or private. Those who are tenants will need to consult their tenancy agreement to identify whether or not their landlord is liable for the repairs.
Regular maintenance is the best solution. This is typically a yearly clean and review of your drains by a professional to insure any small issues don't build up and become a larger problem. You can also make sure that you don't introduce large objects into your drains as they can easily become stuck.

The problem? A Victorian drainage system that entailed excavation work and rerouting. This entailed tracing the old pipework and rerouting all drainage from the house and outhouses.
Ray gave us accurate description of the work this entailed during his initial visit to assess the problem. He was direct and honest in his assessment. He, Dan and Niall arrived promptly at the agreed time and set to work in an organised and professional manner. This gave us time to alert neighbours that the work would close rear access to their houses.

First class service from Ray and his team from coming out to quote to completing the job. So professional, friendly and left the garden tidier than they found it! We had a whole new drainage system put in and was project managed within an inch of it's life, everything ran like clockwork and was complete almost to the exact minute Ray estimated. We couldn't sing their praises enough and would recommend them 100%. It was brilliant seeing them carry out what they know best. Thanks very much Ray and the team. Denise & Mike (Levenshulme) :)
