A dormer (window) is an extension to the existing roof, allowing for additional floor space and headroom within the loft conversion. Dormers protrude from the roof slope, normally at the rear of the property and can be built in a variety of styles. Internally, a dormer will have a horizontal ceiling and vertical walls compared to the normal diagonal sides of a conversion.
A mansard roof has two slopes, the lower slope is close to vertical at 72 degrees and the top section of the roof is almost horizontal. This style of roof is named after a 17th-century French architect Francois Mansart (1598-1666) who used this design of roof on many of his buildings. A mansard roof has the advantage of maximising the available space within your loft.
Hip to gable loft conversions increase the small existing loft space of properties with sloping or hipped roofs by modifying the hipped (sloping) side of the loft to form a flat gable end. The majority of properties in London have a hipped (sloping) roof, which usually means a small loft space. With the existing loft space so small if often makes a loft conversion difficult.
L shape Mansards are very similar to a rear mansard conversion (71 degrees angled wall) but with an additional room over the rear addition / outrigger. An L shape mansard conversion can be achieved on Victorian / Edwardian houses & flats where a rear addition / outrigger is present to the back of the property allowing the mansard to extend over this area.

My wife and I had our loft conversion done by Ash Island back in January and February and couldn't be happier with the end result. From the very start, with our first meeting with Matt to discuss our plans, all the way through to completion, they were fantastic throughout. The construction team were always on time each day, kept us updated with the schedule, made sure the property was kept as clean as possible, always found solutions to tricky problems, resolved the few issues there were straight away and completed the work in a quick timeframe and to a brilliant standard. We are really happy with our loft conversion (two bedrooms and one bathroom) and Matt and the team made it a really smooth and easy process from start to finish. The level of detail and breakdown to their quote was refreshingly transparent and meant there were no unexpected surprises at the end. Karel managed our project day to day and he was brilliant. Cannot recommend Ash Island highly enough. We had our loft converted into a bedroom and shower room and it was completed on time and within budget to a very high standard. Any minor issues were resolved quickly without fuss by Matt and Michelle. Our neighbours have commented on the minimal noise, mess and how friendly the team were! Very very happy with our fabulous new rooms!!

Matt has somehow made a building project pleasurable! His reassuring and friendly confidence is shared by his team and they were honestly a pleasure to have around. The guys were polite, considerate and kept us updated throughout the build.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ash Island. They converted what we thought was a small unusable space into a roomy, light double bedroom and bathroom loft conversion which has transformed our house and looks as though it's always been there. They took care of the whole process from design through planning to completion. They clearly are total experts and we received a much better service from them than anyone else we looked at in terms of design, cost and timescales. We found the team at Ash Island Lofts really affable and easy to do business with. We appreciated how transparent their quote was. There were no hidden charges and any additional work needed during the build was always discussed and agreed with us before pressing ahead.
We also liked the fact we were able to visit a previous job close to us to see the space we'd be able to get before commissioning the build.

I'm not normally one for writing reviews but I felt compelled to in this instance because I cannot recommend Ash Island highly enough. Matt, Lloyd, Aron and the team did a fantastic job with our loft conversion. From start to finish they were efficient, polite, responsive and delivered work of high quality. Moreover they were very competitive on price, stuck to the quotation and even finished the job two weeks ahead of schedule - all things that seem to be unheard of with most builders if my friends are anything to go by!

Ash Island did our loft conversion and I highly recommend them. The whole process was very easy from start to finish.
Matt and Lloyd came to see us and we discussed our requirements and they made some very good suggestions in terms of layout of the stairs and rooms. They actually came up with a brilliant idea to provide us with a greater ceiling height which is actually what made them our preferred contractors.
The costing and the planning application was also very quick and smooth.
