Services
Birmingham developed as an industrial centre around the extensive canal network and it was here that John Sykes first established a timber business in partnership with James Stevens. John Sykes then set up his own premises in Sheepcote Street in 1862, where he sold many hardwood timbers from a variety of countries.
Our hardwood timber merchants business began in Birmingham in 1862 and over 150 years later we remain an independent family owned timber merchant specialising in high quality hardwoods and softwoods. Please note that the images are subject to the limitations of colour reproduction and may not be an accurate representation of the true colour of the timber.
All of our hardwood decking timbers are naturally durable and hard wearing. There is no need to apply any form of treatment as the product will weather to a beautiful silver/grey colour. However decking oil is available to help maintain the natural colour as much as possible, if required. With the range of finishes that we have available decking can also be stained to your preferred colour.

We were looking for quite a while for a nice piece of live edge wood to make a dining table. Many timber yards couldn't help us but kept telling us about sykes, so I have them a call.
The chap on the phone was a great help, knew his products well and gave us some priceless advice. Mentioned they have a show area for live edge wood so we went for a visit.
All the staff were great, and if you like wood you have to go here, the smell, the feel and the old wooden barn that's also a small museum is great. Anyway we took a look at many pieces but feel in love with one perfect slab that we simply had

I spent around 8k with them, paid in advance and they promised delivery by May 11th - they confirmed me and then they never told me it would not be on time. Then instead of emailing they started calling me on 12th tell me it would be four days late when I had a team waiting on 11th! I personally think that is inexcusable and shows contempt for customers - they obviously prioritised another job and could not be bothered to let me know. It's a shame, as their wood is generally very good. After a lot of hassle, they agreed to refund shipping costs which is why I have changed them from 1 to 3 stars

I came here looking for a piece of American Walnut for a gunstock project.
It's a very charming place with a few old wooden buildings left from the 150 years they've been trading as a family owned business.
Unfortunately there wasn't a suitable piece of wood available at the time from the offcuts.
The gentleman helping me was very friendly and helpful and we discussed a full size timber board that would be available, but my project didn't warrant the cost involved in a full length, but the price was pretty reasonable.
We also discussed alternative options in wood, but I think walnut is the

Very disappointed with the service this company gives and the quality of there timber considering they are not cheap.
There knowledge on joinery is very limited as I found out on delivery of my timber. the sill sections supplied were a joke, the salesman tried telling me that their standard sill section is as per picture on right hand side. but when ordering they accepted the description given by myself ie 95 mm flat top going down to 35 mm at the front was ok and understood.
As you can see from the picture the sill on the left is a standard sill section as supplied by most companies.
