Next to The Alpaca Centre in Stainton, Penrith, Cumbria, father and son, Garry and Shaun Stevenson established a woodturning workshop to make a range of products for sale in The Alpaca Centre. Dissatisfied with some of the timber available, they began to convert timber from the log and started milling and drying hardwoods for the small woodturning business.
Due to the high setup costs and the volume of timber produced, it was soon apparent they could also sell timber to other craftsmen. Garry and Shaun's passion means that all profits are invested back into new machinery and infrastructure. A loyal and growing customer base has given the business steady growth year on year.
In 2003 G & S decided to develop a tools and machinery store dedicated to the woodworker with a range of the highest quality products - a place to which woodworkers would be prepared to travel for good service and expert advice. G & S also began to supply joinery manufacturers and then, to meet the volume of timber sold in 2008, a purpose built, fully insulated warehouse was constructed.

Services
Most UK deliveries are shipped within 1 working day providing the order is placed before 2pm but can take up to 4 working days to be delivered. Skirting, mouldings, doors and floors are machined to order and large volumes may take longer to arrive due to extra manufacturing time. 14.95 to remote areas such as the scottish highlands and islands regardless of order value.
There are many types of woodcarving from chip carving to form designs or geometric patterns, carving in the round or three-dimensional carving, relief carving (two dimensional) resulting in raised scenes and characters or designs raised from the background, letter carving, whittling, caricature carving.
Pyrography is the process of using heat to burn marks and decoration into wood. It can be done with very basic tools such as a soldering iron but modern pyrography units have variable temperature controls and a variety of different sized wires or elements to allow subtle shading techniques to be used.
One of the main health hazards in the workshop is dust. Although the large dust particles we can see are a nuisance the main danger is the smaller particles that are microns in size and that float in the air long after the coarser stuff has settled. In a similar price bracket are workshop air filters.
Woodpecker bandsaw blades feature a spring tempered high carbon steel blade with induction re-hardened teeth to 62HRC, providing decreased production times, better surface finish, increased fatigue resistance and longer blade life. Ground teeth assure precision cutting, better finish and less kerf loss.

We can’t thank the fab team at G&S enough for their help and can do attitude when we were tasked with a tricky interior painting job that had both new lime plaster and previously painted walls in a period property. They were fabulous at making sure we got it right and did a great job for our customers. We definitely know where to come in the future.

Ordered some Pfeil carving tools, had some initial issues with the order due to supply (this was outside of G&S control).
The key point was G&S did everything they could to try and assist in a situation that they where put in by suppliers. In the end we changed my order to items they had in stock and these where shipped and delivered within a day.
The customer service of everyone I dealt with was great and they did everything they could to make sure I was happy.
I could not recommend them enough.

I placed an order on the 26th July for dowels which I am still waiting to receive. Upon contacting G&s it seems my parcel was sent to the wrong address and I was reassured that they would contact the courier and get back to me on Monday. However, nobody made any attempt to contact me and instead I had to chase them for an update on my order. Not very happy with their response. I was told that they are waiting for the courier to get back to them. This isn't good enough. How long do I have to wait to receive my order, its already been a week. As a company they are not doing anyting to ensure I receive

I've been buying dowels from G&S for years and have always been impressed with how fast deliveries arrive, even when I need them shipped to France where we often are working. Excellent consistent quality and sizing. Keep up the good work :-) Pictures show sapele dowels used on the instruments we make.

Ordered quite a few times off G&S over the years. Never bothered with a review, but the last shipment, some redwood dowels, well deserves a positive review. Wood was well packed, shipped quickly and was, as always, absolutely beautifully machined and finished. I've never been disappointed by these folks, I bet you won't be either.
