Storm Damp Proofing was formed in 1988 the year my youngest daughter Sian was born. Prior to that my experience in the industry was gained by working for a local preservation company. I worked for this company for ten years. During my time with this company I was encouraged by numerous people to go it alone and eventually I formed Storm.
Rising damp is caused by moisture rising up through porous masonry, the origin of the water being from the ground. Ground water contains soluble salts including chloride and nitrates. The height of the rise of the water is governed by a number of factors including the pore structure.
Insect damage to timber in use in this country is very widespread. However the severity of the damage is in most instances much less than would be caused by an outbreak of dry rot and unless the outbreak is severe replacement of timber is not necessary. Moisture content does not play such an important role in insect infestation as in fungal infestation.
It is important to consider as a special type of wood destroying fungus. It has peculiar features which makes it the most serious type of timber decay in buildings. It can cause decay to timbers at a low moisture content. It has the ability to grow through damp masonry, brickwork and behind wall plaster and timber suspended floors.
A front bay of a 1930s 11 cavity, cavity constructed type property in Barrington Rd Whitchurch Cardiff. The existing bitumen felt dpc has broken down allowing moisture to rise up through the structure depositing salts on the surface. Storm has removed the existing defective render to approximately 1.2.

Great course, good people but no access to memebrship after the course I took. I am taking the Damp qualification only but you need the Timber aswell to become a memeber. Still worth it and will attend more.

Took the PCA training for the CSTDB exams. The speakers were excellent, the course content was clear and I took a lot away from it. You can go in with little knowledge and get by, though some basic understanding will help as the course moves at a decent pace. However, both speakers were more than willing to stop and answer questions before continuing. We were given very comprehensive handouts and contact details for future queries. A really excellent course which I would highly recommend.
