Situated in a striking coastal location, the existing house had previously been extended in a piecemeal way and also had fallen into poor repair. The clients well understood how special and unique the site was, and aspired to create their dream home. After a previous attempt with another designer, they decided to give Igloo Architecture an opportunity to submit proposals.
Conceived in the summer of 2008, this project was closely related to Igloo Architecture during the time of its formation. Against all the odds we gained planning permission to develop a contemporary new building in the heart of a conservation area. The scheme consisted of a supermarket at ground floor with two storeys of residential accommodation above.
To an architect the prospect of designing a new luxury house is like an artist being handed a blank canvas. There are infinite possibilities at the outset but they must soon give way to the rigorous and informed process of actual design. In this case the client wanted to achieve a visionary contemporary house with light airy spaces which combined the right balance between closed rooms and areas of open plan.
Although our city centres have benefitted from investment and regeneration, yet if you walk for just five minutes from the centre you can still be confronted with decay and neglect in the buildings and the environment. We know all too well the disillusionment and despair that follows. So often a vicious circle results in the blighting of whole areas of our towns and cities.
