Disastrous experience and outcome resulting in a house that was functionally obsolete and aesthetically disproportionate. Lewis demonstrated incompetence on many levels, poor communication and an arrogant/dismissive attitude. Once appointed, Lewis passed the design work onto his intern/trainee (not a qualified architect) who left halfway through the planning application process and it was passed onto a new intern. Changes had to be made due to poor/location of bathrooms and windows, however the amended design meant bedrooms that did not have adequate space for wardrobes. Due to poor communication between them and their recommended structural engineer, the ceiling downstairs had to be reduced from the standard height to 2.3m, as they did not allow sufficient ceiling height for the services to run under it. Two bathrooms had to be moved to the opposite side of the house as they were on the wrong side of the foul drains - this resulted in the prefabricated timberframe structure requiring a redesign at an additional cost of £6000 (as the timberframe had already be manufactured). A carport that was on one side of the house had to be moved to the other side after it was realised that a car would not be able to get in or out! Furthermore they designed the first floor 31mm out of sync with the ground floor (this resulted in the prefabricated timber upper floor not aligning with the concrete block ground floor). Philip Lewis agreed to pay for a structural bracket to be made to hold up a structural steel post which was 31mm hanging over the central stairwell - however he emailed me that the error was not their fault as I (the client) should have checked HIS drawings and measurements - and ended by telling me never to contact him again about this project! There were other issues which caused frustration and distress (I.e when Philip Lewis repeatedly refused to provide cill dimensions to the window company or dimensions on the setting out plan to the builder, eventually complying when I got involved - both contractors saying this was the first time an architect refused to assist). Finally, Philip Lewis threatened to charge me an additional £1400 (+VAT) in the form of a previously unmentioned (fictitious) invoice, if I reported him to the Architects Register Board (and not accept his offer to pay just £655 for metal brackets to hold up the overhanging wall which was caused by his miscalculations!). House still not finished after more than two years as the poor design/site layout has caused complication upon complication, and unnecessary additional costs.

We've found Lewis Partnership to be very professional and approachable. From the start of the project, the design of the new extension has been excellent, accommodating our personal preferences and needs. The whole process of design, tendering, the planning process, structural engineer reports, liaising with the builder etc, has gone very smoothly. The final result is a fabulous extension with a generous-sized kitchen and a spacious shower room, future-proofing our house in respect of disabilities. We would not hesitate to recommend them.
