J & B O'Brien are building contractors based around the South Croydon area, specialising in small private build work and working for local authorities on schools. We employ direct trained labour, but also call on reliable sub-contractors for specialised work. Our direct labour team have all been CRB checked.
We are registered with the Federation of Master Builders and the Construction Industry Training Board, to whom we pay a levy annually to assist with Apprentership training. Formed in 1973 by Directors John & Beryl O'Brien, the early years consisted mainly of Housing Association refurbishment work.
In 1983, sons Mike & Steve embarked on a career in the family run business, enrolling at NESCOT to study Carpentry & Joinery and Brickwork respectively.Steve was to become the 3rd generation of Bricklayers, following John and both Grandads. The Company carried on the Refurbishment work, but steadily changed to Extensions, Local Authority School work, and small new Build projects.

J & B O'Brien have established a reputation for quality work for Local Authorities. This case study shows the progress of a project for a local school, where obsolete classrooms that were no longer being used were replaced with a new outdoor classroom and stage. The first stage of the project was to clear the old site and prepare it for the new construction about to take place.
