S2 Design. Architects
S2 design ltd was founded in 2008 by Jeremy Dain. With experience including commercial and retail, community, health and education, new build and conversion and conservation, S2 offers a broad range of design skills. Working in close conjunction with building scientists and environmentally-conscious builders, we have particular expertise in designing low-impact buildings, with an emphasis on new housing - contemporary, contextual and sustainable.

Jeremy is a registered* architect and has qualifications in both architecture and engineering and has worked in architectural practice since the 1970's. He set up S2 after more than twenty five years as a director of Inscape Architects, an award-winning practice based in the heart of Bristol.

He has taught at university - specialising in structures and environmental science - and been involved in software development and research on low-energy buildings and the integration of micro-generation systems.Jointly running a design-build company in parallel with architectural practice gave him an understanding of the complexities of construction and a strong respect for the skills of the whole design and contracting team.

Making good buildings is an exciting challenge, but starting out on a building project, whatever the scale, can be daunting. It's a complex process with many decisions to be made, and probably a few reversals of fortune on the way. As architects we are, or certainly should be, involved at the earliest stages to assist in making reality of intent.
We love new, contemporary design. But everything we do is informed by what's gone before. There's so much remarkable building from our past, and we must care for it as well as learn from it. We've gained a lot of experience from working with historic buildings and enjoy the challenge of careful restoration as well as sensitive alteration and addition.
Although building standards in this country are now much improved in terms of ensuring that new buildings have modest 'carbon footprints', there are other standards that can be applied that are even more responsible. The 'Passivhaus' standard, a voluntary code for producing buildings of high energy efficiency, is currently the most widely known and used.
