MAD Architects
MAD architects is a RIBA Chartered architectural practice based in Chesterfield, creating design led, sustainable buildings in Sheffield, Chesterfield and throughout Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and the Peak District. We are small practice with a proven flair for designing creative solutions that are backed up and built with fifteen years of technical experience.

We provide a personal service at all stages of your project, but with the professional service expected of a larger practice. We strive to create great designs that respect the environment. During the early design stages we integrate sustainable features, maximising benefits and minimising cost.

By encouraging the adoption of sustainable principles into each project we aim to create architecture that offers benefits both today and for future generations. We utilise leading BIM software to design all our projects in 3D, enabling us to spend more time designing your project, rather than just producing drawings.
Services
I've been a qualified architect for over 10 years, since I finished my 7 years of architectural training at the university of Sheffield. Before starting MAD I worked at a large commercial practice, in Sheffield and worked on a range of projects, for clients including the Home Office, Suzuki, Westfield shopping centres & developers Wilson Bowden.
We know it is a little daunting, even scary, but that's OK, we've done this before. We have a proven professional process that will see your project develop from a hand drawn sketch right through to something wonderful. We will normally visit the proposed project with you, enabling us to introduce ourselves and run through the normal process of undertaking a project, the legislation involved and likely timescales.
MAD were appointed following the client acquiring an existing property, with an intention of redeveloping the site. Our client has lived in the area for the majority of her life, and wanted to stay in the area but was finding her current traditional house too large for her needs providing increasing mobility issues.
MAD architects are currently working on a scheme to redevelop the site of the Trumpeter as a new local centre for the Grangewood estate. Whilst many public house are being converted into convenience stores with the loss of social amenities for local communities, we are working with our client to undertake a complete redevelopment of the site to provide much needed facilities, whilst providing a new cafe/ bar for community.
The clients had a clear vision to transform this house into a throughly modern, light & open plan home. Internally the existing property has been completely reconfigured, including relocating the staircase to create a larger entrance hallway, with a double height gallery space allowing light deep into the heart of the property.

The help, advice, and work undertaken by MAD Architects llp, proved to be invaluable in dealing with an extremely stubborn Council. We wouldn't have got to where we are now without Martin, we will be eternally grateful for him undertaking our project, keeping us in the picture in easy to understand updates, and for his professionalism. Many thanks all at MAD Architects llp, especially Martin, great work.

After talking to a number of architects about our ideas and vision, we were delighted to find that Martin understood them and then took them to the next level. His emphasis on 'flow' and light throughout the re-modelled house was the key to the work. With his support, advice and guidance we have a totally modernised four bedroom, three bathroom house with a new kitchen, and a natural 'flow' for people, air and light, plus a 21st century insulated property with extra external insulation and modern rendering. Martin's interest in 'green' development and 'future proofing' have allowed us to design

Martin was recommended to us by a friend. I'm a very fussy type of guy and Martin was quick to understand this, he was patient understanding and professional throughout. He always responds to concerns, never missed an appointment or failed to respond to texts. I'm an old fashioned pen and paper type so I wasn't immediately impressed when Martin told me drawings would be done on C.A.D. however Martin was able to quickly produce clear drawings and could quickly alter details that would have taken ages otherwise. the computer program also enabled a simulated tour of the building which also proved

Martin is very personable but entirely professional. He took time to understand what we needed and was very patient. He shared impressive examples of various projects. The pricing structure is clear. The drawings enabled us to fully visualise the extension. I would certainly recommend this firm.

Before I started this project I approached a number of architects for ideas and costs. I issued a brief, which was to update and extend a 1930s bungalow to double the size and to incorporate modern features while still retaining the look of the original bungalow from the front and Martin from MAD Architects was the only one to follow the brief and come up with ideas to vastly improve it, and also his costs were the most competitive. Martin has worked with me from day one right through to completion and we are thoroughly delighted with the result. Nothing has been too much trouble for Martin and

The house already had a large rear extension meaning our desire for a further lounge extension was likely to run into planning difficulties. Martin exploited his sound knowledge of ‘Permitted Development’ rights to design a detached timber clad living space to meet our requirements that didn’t need planning permission. It was a pleasure working with Martin, stage by stage, to translate our initial ideas into a fully developed stylish building complete with construction and engineering details.

Martin designed the extension to our new home. He listened to our requirements and suggested a number of different options, explaining possible problems and radical alternative solutions that we hadn't thought of before providing a couple of concept designs. We picked the design we liked best and fine tuned it with Martin before he submitted the planning and building regulation applications which were approved without any problems. Martin service was very professional and he produced an interesting design that we think will be perfect for us.

Martin was recently commissioned by us to produce plans for a substantial home redevelopment. The work was completed to the highest standard with every minor detail in our brief being incorporated in the final design. The plans were positively supported by the planning department and the quality of the design was specifically highlighted in the final report.
His experience in commercial architecture practice showed with the final detailed plans providing such a high level of detail that the tendering process progressed in an efficient manner. The construction companies involved commended the detail
