We are a small, independent company with strong roots in the textile heart of Manchester, we've been making tough, beautiful furniture here since 1990. We left our jobs in scientific research to set up a sustainable business where we could be responsible for the ethical and environmental impact of every aspect of our actions.
We wanted to extend our holistic outlook on living to the way we worked too, as a positive and practical force for fairness, healthy living and a sound environment. Our approach has always been simple and down to earth, we use the best organic and natural materials to produce well designed, functional eco goods that are made to be used, to be enjoyed and to last.
We are committed to fair trade from start to finish, from sourcing ethically produced fabrics and fillings to honest pricing of our products. Our journey has been challenging, exciting and creative and would mean nothing without the support and inspiration of family, friends, producers, suppliers and of course our customers.

Watch this space for recent finds, special offers, seasonal suggestions and more Dojo products, we've got lots more ideas for our own handmade goods. This has turned out to be rather a long list, which isn't surprising since this is where we started out in 1990-making things to sleep on! Then we just kept on adding products as people kept asking for them.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art that focuses on defence and communication. We study self defence in its wider sense, from physical locks and throws, dealing with grabs and strikes and learning about posture, balance and co-ordination to exploring the qualities of calmness, assertiveness, awareness and compassion.

A couple of years ago we were talking to some organic farmers and were shocked to find that the wool from their organic sheep was worth so little that they were having to add it to ordinary wool bales and sell it as non organic in order to get some money for it, and even then it was virtually not worth the cost of shearing.
People used to wonder why a bed shop was selling soap, but at the same time they really liked the locally made, organic soap we were stocking, and asked for more bodycare products too. We've always used natural and organic bath stuff having suffered from eczema and sensitive skin, so we've chosen products we know and love, old favourites, great new ones, and customer recommendations.

Faultless customer service from this wonderful little business that makes organic bedding. Sarah has been my main point of contact and has answered every question I’ve had with utmost patience and in comprehensive detail. After a lengthy chain of correspondence, I had not been able to proceed with my original purchase due to circumstances outside of my control. Sarah was most understanding about this and throughout was so kind and personable, the likes of which are rarely seen in this day and age. I did subsequently recommend the company to my sister who ordered two mattresses. 5 years later

Some years ago if you'd mentioned the words ethical, eco and organic in the same sentence to a hardened department store shopper, you see them quickly running for the hills with images of treehuggers in cheesecloth sh*tcatchers.
The tides are slowly turning though, and our stubborn consumerist attitudes towards organic and ethical products are changing for the better. Shops like Dojo will surely be making more and more headway over the next few years, offering alternatives to everything from matresses to clothes. I love that they carry my personal lifesaver Dr Brommers soap. Shame that Dojo
